This month marks the date of trials races for potential Henley Boat Race athletes - Oxford lightweight men (OULRC) arranged their race at Henley on Sunday 11 December, while the Cambridge women (CUWBC) and lightweight men (CULRC) raced five days later, on Friday 16 December. Although CULRC raced at Henley CUWBC had to reschedule their event at the Dorney Rowing Lake, at Eton. Oxford University Women's Boat Club do not hold formal trials races at Henley.
SUNDAY 11 DECEMBER
Oxford University Lightweight Rowing Club (OULRC)
Henley Reach - 1400hrs
'Hard' and 'Fast' raced in cold but calm conditions over Henley Reach, watched by a partisan crowd of about thirty supporters, and with very little to choose between the crews it was a tight race to Remenham. Then 'Hard' drew ahead, but poor steering led to repeated warnings from the umpire - after a clash of blades 'Hard' increased their lead to win by 1 1/2 lengths.

FRIDAY 16 DECEMBER
Cambridge University Lightweight Rowing Club (CULRC)
Henley Reach - 1100hrs
Rowing in two evenly matched crews Cambridge lightweight men produced the closest verdict ever recorded in a trials race when 'Disorderly' beat 'Drunk' by just six inches in a time of 6 mins 38 secs. Neither crew ever let up the pressure, as the lead changed hands several times during the race, and with both crews rating 34 to the line, 'Disorderly' won the race on thr final catch.

FRIDAY 16 DECEMBER
Cambridge University Women's Boat Club (CUWBC)
Dorney Reach - 1230hrs
Strong winds at Dorney Lake caused officials to close the course during the morning, so CUWBC held a series of warm-up outings on Dorney Reach of the adjacent River Thames. Conditions later in the day on the rowing lake were just as bad, so the planned side-by-side race trials had to be abandoned and substituted by a Head race back on the river.
